Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

At this time, it is appropriate to reflect on the passing year, and to begin thinking about the plans for 2020. The directors prepared a budget in October and forwarded the budget to the financial committee for suggestions and advice.  We presented the proposed budget with the recommendation from the financial committee at the November annual meeting. After the presentation, members had a 30-day comment period. The proposed budget passed at the December meeting.

We have been very successful with our building projects, landscaping, social events, and other numerous items. This success is evident by the many positive comments from our members. We have reduced some of our operating expenses thus saving thousands of dollars; however, due to being sued by the Town of Carolina Shores, we did not immediately benefit from these saving. The savings are in place and should benefit us in the near future. The directors are planning a reserve study workshop in February to develop our priorities. Members are encouraged to attend and participate in this workshop.

Many thanks to our staff members and volunteers who plan activities to better our neighborhood. Special thanks for many of our members for their unwavering support throughout the year.

We live in a truly unique and wonderful neighborhood. Great places to shop, dine and the ocean is minutes away.  Brunswick County has the best beaches on the coast! The recreation that the coast provides is unlimited. The small towns of Shallotte and Calabash only add to the charm of Brunswick County. When we return home, we are welcomed by beautiful entryways and the gates. The common grounds are improving each year and so are our facilities. We are blessed; and what better time to enjoy this blessing than right now. Enjoy the holidays, whether you are traveling or staying at home! We hope for great goodness and tender mercy by working together next year!

Communications – Kelly Wilson

Along with this year’s assessments being sent to you, you will see a new form that is being requested for all members to complete, sign and return to the CSPOA. This follows all guidelines and laws pertaining to the personal information and personal identifying acts in place federally and statewide. These are becoming mandatory in all aspects of the digital age that we have moved into.

By law, names and addresses are public information, but personal information such as phone numbers, email address(es) and other personal information is still protected under the personal privacy information acts. Your signature on file will give us your authority to print and distribute phone numbers and email addresses (if you choose) in the community directory. Any member not returning the authorization will not have their personal information published in future directories.

This will also give us the legal right to transmit any information to the email address(es) on file that would be beneficial to any or all members. This would include blast emails that are sent and give us future capabilities to send out property approvals, assessments, fines, and any other necessary information that can be done by electronic communication. We will be looking into this to try to reduce the amount of paperwork and the cost of postage used every year.

Please remember that you should never give your Social Security number to anyone, the Social Security office will never call for any information.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

This month I would like to address the issue of yard/utility trailers stored on your property. This is prohibited under the Rules & Regulations Section III, Paragraph B-1 and the Declaration of Restrictions Section 6, Subsection 9, which reads: “No trailer of any kind may be stored overnight on any property unless parked in a garage or under a carport.”

If you are doing a construction or remodeling project, there is the availability of a permit for a trailer, dumpster or container for a specified time period during the project. This permit is available at the POA/ACC office.

As always, it is best to contact the ACC if there is a question that you may be in violation of the Rules and Regulations and/or the Declaration of Restrictions. The POA office is open Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

NOTICE

For the members that use the POA clubhouse regularly, please remember to complete the Clubhouse Schedule Agreement for 2020. REMINDER, REMINDER, REMINDER

All roads in Carolina Shores are 25 MPH except Country Club and Persimmon Roads which are 35 MPH. They are fairly narrow and often have landscaping and other commercial vehicles parked on the side of the roads, which can make driving a little hazardous. All vehicles should observe the speed limits.

Please remember to walk against the traffic and ride your bike with the traffic. We’ve had some near misses and we don’t want anyone to get hurt. Thank you for your cooperation.

Tennis News – Bob Anthony

Hope you have a Happy, Healthy New Year!

Open tennis continues through the cold winter months, as cold as southern North Carolina gets. Open tennis occurs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 9:00 a.m. Everyone showing up will get to play. Skill level is not a factor. Just show up with the proper shoes and a racquet (or borrow one from another player) and you will get to play.

There has been some damage to court #4. Please do not bring skateboards, in-line skates, skates of any kind onto the tennis courts. The courts are for tennis and pickle ball only. Court Shoes only! If your temper must be released, please exit the courts to let it go. Do not do anything to damage the courts. Resurfacing the courts is an expensive proposition and impacts us all.

Please be safe in 2020 and beyond.

Low Impact Chair Aerobics Mary Timothy

Chair Aerobics meets every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Yes, five days a week. The class is for everyone and there is no charge. You will need one-pound weights for beginners. Advanced students use your own judgment on weights.

New Friends Reunion Margie Pettersen

Members of the former New Friends group had a great time on Tuesday recollecting our memories of the group. We recounted so many fun times and humorous stories. We remembered going on trips to the beach and movie outings. We had fun sampling area restaurants and enjoying expeditions offered by the wonderful travel team: the Moveable Feast, Raleigh, Swansboro, The Collector's Cafe, Pelican baseball games, the Culinary Institute, Wilmington Christmas house tour, Southport, Wilmington shopping excursions to The Ivy Cottage, a Caribbean cruise, and much more. We took turns offering clever programs and inviting guest speakers. This group started the tradition of a Thanksgiving dinner for the community, set up a donation box for the food bank, kept frozen dinners on hand for neighbors in need, and contributed to the Southwest Brunswick Interchurch Council (S.B.I.C) for their food drives. We formed precious lifetime friendships and wonderful memories. A special thank you to the indomitable Marlene Stewart, who founded this group in 2003.   Click here to see a larger view of picture.

Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall

Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group? We meet every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the POA Board room off the kitchen. If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us. We’d love to see new faces.

The group meets and shares patterns and expertise. We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc. Usually we even have dessert!

Our meetings in January will be on the 6th and 20th at 6.30 p.m.

If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.

Garden Club Carol Filkins

The Soup and Bake Sale was a big success. Altogether we made over $1400. This money will go towards scholarships for deserving seniors from West Brunswick High School.

The holiday luncheon at Parson’s Table was enjoyed by forty-four members and guests. Our membership includes new members Karen Berg, Alda Tavares, Mary VanDyke and Julia Lally.

The next meeting will be on January 8, 2020 with speaker Micki Bozeman from Brunswick County Solid Waste and Recycling Department. She will be talking about recycling and the county’s free mulch program.

Our next fundraiser will be a Cards and Games Luncheon on February 12 at the CSPOA clubhouse. Tickets will be on sale at the January meeting for $16. Members and guests choose the games they want to play. For each game, please know who your participants are, write their name on an envelope with the money inside and bring to the meeting. This way we’ll know how to set up the tables. Let’s make this one another great success!

Wishing everyone Happy New Year.

New Horizons Carla Urban

MCj04398570000[1]The singles group had its Christmas Dinner at The Parsons Table on the 12th of December and, of course, it was enjoyed by all of us who were able to be there.

All of us in New Horizons wish the Carolina Shores residents a happy and healthy Holiday Season.

Our January 14 meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. in the POA clubhouse. Mr. Joe Juskis, a water treatment specialist, was scheduled to be our speaker at the November meeting, but when it had to be cancelled, he agreed to come to the January meeting. He will be giving us lots of information about water treatment issues and what is going on about it in our area. I am sure that we will have lots of questions to ask him. If you write them down before the meeting, it would be very helpful, and he will be able to answer them for us.

Any single resident in our community is welcome to come and see what we are about and if you would like transportation, please call me at 575-2339 and it will be arranged for you. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month September thru June. Each person brings a dish to share and their own beverage. We look forward to seeing new members to start off the New Year.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe Book Discussion Group reading selection for December was Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her by Melanie Rehak. Since many of our members read and loved the Nancy Drew books when we were young, it was especially interesting to us to find out the truth about the writing of the series and to discover who the mysterious authors really were.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the POA library. We’ll be discussing The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal and will follow that with our post-holiday potluck luncheon. All members are asked to bring a dish to share. Please contact Pat McKay to let her know what you are planning to bring.

As always, all Carolina Shores residents who love to read and talk about what they have read are invited to join our group.

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
